Airbnb says it will ban rioters from DC opening hours

Airbnb says it will review all reservations in the Washington area, and anyone associated with a hate group will have their reservation canceled and banned from Airbnb. The company also said it is taking action against individuals involved in criminal activities on Capitol, including permanently banning them from the platform.

Airbnb did not say measures would be taken outside the bans.

Airbnb steps may not stop a person with violent intentions to stay on one of their properties. The names of everyone involved in the Capitol riots are not known, making it difficult to issue a comprehensive ban. Airbnb said it is a cross-reference to a January 6 arrest record from the DC police department. It is also reviewing the US Attorney’s press releases listing arrests and charges.

Airbnb declined to say whether it canceled any reservations since the expansion of its security plan to DC on Monday. Airbnb also declined to say whether it will review reservations near all state capitals, where armed protests are being planned, according to the FBI.
DC Mayor Muriel Bowser encouraged Americans to stay away from the city and watch the opening online.

DC area hotels will also face the risks of hosting people who revolted last week on Capitol Hill.

Thomas Penny, president of Donohoe Hospitality Services, which operates 12 hotels in the DC area, said people involved in Capitol events stayed at some of its hotels. But he said his hotels did not know exactly who was involved in the violence.

Penny said her hotels had dealt with some “problems”, but that, in general, guests had been quiet for the past week. He refused to go into details about what the problems were. He said his hotels near the Capitol would remain closed as a security clause until after the opening, but they will be open for business.

“We demand that people respect our team and follow our hotel guidelines,” said Penny. “As long as they do that, they will respect our people and follow our guidelines, we are here to welcome everyone.”

He said his hotels are making rates attractive to attract members of the National Guard. Thousands of National Guard soldiers are expected to be in town for the inauguration.

The Washington, DC Hotel Association did not respond to requests for comment.
