Aiming the penalty against Clemson that left Ohio Fields injured Justin Fields irritates fans

A target penalty against Clemson linebacker James Skalski in the second quarter of a College Football Playoff semifinal against Ohio State left fans confused and upset.

Skalski came as a heat-oriented missile at Justin Fields with 5:57 remaining in the first half. In his attack, Skalski placed the crown of his helmet on Fields’s back. The Ohio state quarterback stayed on the ground for a few moments holding his back while officials reviewed the move.

Officials determined that Skalaski should be penalized for targeting, which is an automatic expulsion.

Two moves later, Ohio State extended its lead to 28-14 when Fields returned to the game and fired a touchdown pass to Chris Olave. Fields then left the field in obvious pain.
