After the Capitol rebellion, Deputy Beyer asks McCarthy to resign

Deputy Don Beyer, D-Va., Asked the House minority leader to resign on Saturday after the Capitol riot that left five dead.

“After terrorists spilled blood on our Capitol, Kevin McCarthy went to the House and led the new attack on our democracy,” Beyer said in a statement. “He repeated Trump’s incendiary lies and dehumanizing attacks on political opponents, and now he claims to oppose ‘division?’ No. Kevin McCarthy must resign. “

McCarthy, who recently won re-election as Republican leader in the House after winning 10 Republican Party seats in the November elections, condemned the violence on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, but still opposed the election results when Congress met again at that night.

House minority leader Steve Scalise, the second-in-command of House Republicans, also supported the objection, although Republican Party Conference President Liz Cheney criticized Republican objections and blamed President Trump for inciting crowd.

McCarthy and Scalise are now facing internal reactions among House Republicans for continuing to line up with Trump in the wake of the crowd, Politico said on Saturday.

McCarthy spoke with President-elect Joe Biden on Friday, saying he plans to “talk to him about how we should work together to lower the temperature and unite the country to solve America’s challenges”.

“The task ahead of us at the next Congress and the next Biden government couldn’t be more important,” McCarthy said in a statement.

Several Democratic senators asked the Sens. Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz to step down for their roles in opposing the election results.

Senator Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, also became the first Republican senator on Friday to publicly ask President Trump to step down after the Capitol riots.

“I want him to resign. I want him to leave. He has already done enough damage,” Murkowski told Anchorage Daily News.
