After all, the iPhone 13 may not be portless, but it has a brand new connector

Apple just won a new patent from the US Patent & Trademark Office – and is a new smart magnetic connector designed in various styles. There is no official Apple announcement yet, but it may be safe to suspect that such a charger may be reaching the iPhone 13. Apple had previously used a similar type of connector on the iPad, designed to connect to Apple’s smart keyboard.

In this new design, it will look like a more regular-style loading port, different from the three holes for the smart keyboard.

We always thought that the next generation of the iPhone would probably be without port, working only with wireless charging (for better or worse). Some time ago, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed Apple’s plan to remove all ports from the iPhone 13 Pro Max this year. More recently this year, a note from the investor was revealed by the same analyst, claiming that this year’s iPhone models will retain all Lightning connectors, rather than USB-C or without a port. Whether or not these reports were false leads remains to be seen after we have received more concrete evidence from Apple. We already have the Qi based Apple’s MagSafe charger (proven to work with other phone brands as well), which shows that they are looking to a wireless future to some extent.

If Apple really decides to implement its patented smart magnetic connector on the iPhone 13, it may not be the end of the world. While it’s annoying to have to throw away all of our Lightning cables (and, of course, we can say goodbye to wired EarPods forever), it seems that such a connection can make chargers less susceptible to damage from kinks, which means that you can no longer have to go through cables like anyone else. From the patent photos, it appears that a vigorous tug to the side on the cable can simply disconnect it, instead of risking breaking the charger. The iPhone 13 is certainly compatible with wireless charging in any case, and we are waiting for Apple for more news.
