Today, the American Film Institute announced its top ten films of the year, usually a precursor to the Oscar nominations for Best Picture. To crown this year of unusual distribution, streaming services dominated, with Netflix topping the list with four films, a record for the platform: Mank, From Five Bloods, The Chicago Trial 7 and Black Bottom by Ma Rainey. AFI also chose two Amazon movies – Metal sound and the debut in the direction of Regina King, One night in miami – to go with four of the main Hollywood powers: Disney’s Soul, A24’s Minari, Do Searchlight Nomadland and Warner Bros. ‘ Judas and the Black Messiah. This year’s list is also a record for diversity, with more than half of the films featuring major black casts. The good news for competitors like World News and Promising young woman? This list is not the end of all award show predictions.
On the television side, Netflix led again, with The Crown, Bridgerton, The Queen’s Gambit, and Unorthodox everyone making the list. Romps like Disney + ‘s Mandelorian and Apple Ted Lasso won honors and Disney + ‘s Hamilton received a special award for his adaptation of Tony’s winning musical.
