Adult dependents may be entitled to money

Austin Goergen, a student at Oregon State University, initiated a petition last year to allow addicts aged 17 and over to qualify for stimulus checks.

Washington lawmakers are one step closer to authorizing new $ 1,400 stimulus checks for millions of Americans.

This time, a large group may become eligible for the first time: dependents aged 17 or over.

This is as long as the bill that the Chamber of Deputies plans to approve and move to the Senate is approved in its current form. The legislation is expected to be finalized in mid-March.

That change would be great news for people like Austin Goergen, 20, a student at Oregon State University, who last year started a Change.org petition when he realized that the first $ 1,200 stimulus checks would exclude those like him and his colleagues who had been alleged to be dependents.

Goergen’s petition received nearly 5,000 signatures. Still, the second $ 600 stimulus checks authorized by Congress in December continued to exclude individuals from that cohort, despite some requests from both sides of the corridor to change those terms.

Previous estimates by the American Enterprise Institute indicated that expanding stimulus payments to adult dependents could make an additional 26 million people eligible to receive money.

This generally covers college students, as well as adults with disabilities that may have been claimed by a janitor.

“It seemed like a really big oversight,” said Goergen.

The new account is likely to require adult dependents to coordinate with those who claimed them and therefore receive the money. However, Goergen said it is an improvement over previous payments.

“I think the current project in terms of how it is addressing stimulus checks does a much better job,” he said.

The legislative proposal provides for payments of US $ 1,400 per person, as long as they are within certain income limits.

Individuals with up to $ 75,000 of adjusted gross income qualify for full payments, as well as heads of households who earn up to $ 112,500 and couples who file joint actions with up to $ 150,000.

Checks would be reduced to incomes above these limits and limited to US $ 100,000 for single registrars, US $ 150,000 for household heads and US $ 200,000 for joint registrars.

This time, elimination fees are based on the status of the lawsuit and the number of children you have, noted Garrett Watson, senior policy analyst at the Tax Foundation.

“In fact, this is because they wanted to ensure that architects above a certain income level did not receive any payments,” said Watson.

People should be aware of this when determining how much money to expect this time, he said.

As with the second $ 600 stimulus payment, families of mixed status families, where only one spouse has a valid Social Security number, would also be eligible. Payments would go to the eligible spouse and their children, provided they also had a valid Social Security number.

The Chamber’s Ways and Means Committee asked to base payments on tax returns for 2019 or 2020.

As long as the legislation passes without delay, experts hope that deposits of $ 1,400 will be able to begin arriving in late March.
