Adobe officially unveiled Photoshop for Apple’s M1 chip. According to the company, the ARM-compliant version is expected to offer “significant performance gains” to users of Apple’s custom silicone.
While Adobe had a beta version of Photoshop for M1 available since November, this is the first time that it is widely available. Previously, Apple users could run the Intel version using Apple’s Rosetta technology, which did not fully harness the power of the new chip.
The M1 version of the application, says Adobe, provides a 50% performance increase compared to similar Intel Macs:
Our in-house tests show a wide range of features running on average 1.5X the speed of similarly configured systems from the previous generation. Our tests covered a wide scope of activities, including opening and saving files, running filters and heavy computing operations like Content-Aware Fill and Select Subject, which seem noticeably faster. Our initial benchmarking also shows that some operations are substantially faster with the new chip.
Be warned that there are some recent features missing from the M1 version of the app, especially inviting others to edit cloud documents and preset synchronization.
It is unclear how much faster the M1 version would compare to current Intel chips, but it is clear that Adobe sees the benefit of switching to ARM architecture. “Do not blink. You can miss the initial screen startup, ”says Adobe
