When the South Carolina offensive line coach Greg Adkins I met the offensive coordinator and defender coach Marcus Satterfield in 2003, the aspiring coach was a graduate assistant in Tennessee. Now, almost two decades later, Satterfield is building the Gamecocks offensive for his fellow graduate assistant, Shane Beamer.
Adkins could not have praised Satterfield more on Monday when asked how he saw Satterfield evolve as a coach from those days in Knoxville until the start of his term together at Columbia.
“His work habits, how he works, his professionalism and everything about him is about improving himself, his room and all the coaches,” said Adkins. “He works a lot. I appreciate what he’s doing now. “
When Adkins was hired by Beamer on January 22, he said Satterfield was one of the first people he spoke to in the car on the way to Columbia. They talked and it hasn’t stopped since.
“It has been phenomenal,” said Adkins. “He is all ball and works until the end. He’s been watching the movie non-stop, talking ball since we got here. The best thing about him is that he listens. Everyone in the room has a voice and everyone can express their opinion on his experience and he listens. If there is a better way to do this, this is how we do it. That is the mark of a good leader. “

Adkins comes to Carolina after spending the last three seasons as an offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Marshall University, working under the coach. Doc Holliday. Marshall posted a 24-12 record for 2018-20 on what was his second service tour with Thundering Herd.
In 2020, Thundering Herd yielded 12 sacks in 10 games, occupying 13th place in the country, while allowing only 3.5 tackles per defeat, the fourth best mark in the country.
Satterfield comes to Columbia with more than 20 years of coaching experience in college, including two years as a head coach at Tennessee Tech. He has spent the past three years working under the tutelage of Matt Rhule, first as the recruitment director at Baylor in 2018, then as the Bears tight ends coach in 2019, before spending the 2020 season as the assistant coach of the Carolina Panthers offensive line.
