Activision has suggested possible changes to the annual Call of Duty League cycle in the future.
As with the regular Call of Duty cycle, the CoD sports scene changes to the most recent CoD game each year. So, while the 2020 season saw professional players in Modern Warfare, they are now in Black Ops Cold War.
For a long time, some competitive fans have been clamoring for more longevity in the games being played, similar to more popular sports titles like League of Legends or Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
A longer life cycle allows games to develop and players to really master what they are playing. Even now, in the games mentioned, we see new strategies in action and evolve the game to the next level.
Call of Duty sports switch games every year to follow the CoD cycle, but that may be about to change.
Obviously, for sports purists, an annual life cycle is considered detrimental to a title’s competitive scene – and it seems that these conversations may be taking place at Activision, too, in relation to the CDL.
In an interview with Inverse, Activision Blizzard’s CRO, Brandon Snow, was asked about the annual cycle, and gave an answer that will certainly raise some eyebrows.
“If you’re asking if we’re going to play the Cold War for four years, possibly; If it made sense to us, the player base supported and the audience supported, ”he said. “We are changing our e-sports based on the most recent title to keep it as relevant as possible. But could there be a world in which we hold a title for several years? We are not convinced of any specific strategy. “
The Call of Duty League may be changing its format significantly if these tips are very important.
Although this is not a confirmation of anything, it definitely suggests that there is a possibility that the annual cycle will be completely discarded for the CDL.
Whether this will happen this year or at some point in the future, it is impossible to say; as Snow himself says, they are still not convinced of any specific strategy. But it is very revealing that the idea has not been completely closed.
In another part of the interview, Snow discussed the possibility of live Fortnite-like events coming to Warzone, and how the battle royale title can be integrated into the electronic sports scene.
Needless to say, there may be major changes in the future of Call of Duty, but we will have to wait and see what happens.
