This year’s Oscar is going to be weird. With the pandemic moving most of the axes of support from 2020 to 2021, you would think that there would be a shortage of films to make the list of visual effects, one of the nine lists revealed by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences before the 2021 Oscar nominee announcement on March 15. But 2021 Oscar shortlist candidates are expected and unexpected, ranging from Birds of prey, that Warner Bros. did not campaign for, arriving in two lists, for the Taiwanese underdog One sun earning a place on the list of best international short film after critical acclaim for the drama, discreetly released on Netflix in early 2020, catapulted him into the awards, dear.

Due to the pandemic, this will be the first year since 2009 that the VFX selection list does not contain at least one Marvel film. But, in a way, it left room for many unexpected candidates to enter the Academy Awards 2021 shortlist revealed by the Academy (via The Hollywood Reporter).
The films that made the nine lists – which include VFX, documentary and international resources – include The Midnight Sky and Principle in VFX, Emma. for the best makeup, Another round and One sun in the best international resources, Eurovision“Husavik” got a place on the list of best original songs after being snubbed by the Globes, and Birds of prey appearing on the makeup and VFX lists.
The 2021 Oscar nominees will be announced on March 15. The 93rd Oscar will be presented on April 25, instead of its typical window in February, due to the pandemic.

Fifteen films will advance to the next round of voting in the International Feature category for the 93rd Oscar. Films from 93 countries were eligible in the category.
Academy members from all branches have been invited to participate in the preliminary voting round and must meet a minimum viewing requirement to be eligible to vote in the category.
In the nomination round, Academy members from all branches are invited to choose to participate and must see all 15 films selected to vote.

All members of the Academy’s makeup and hairdressing business will be invited to virtually watch seven-minute snippets of each of the ten films selected on Saturday, March 6, 2021. Members of the business will vote to nominate five films for the final consideration of the Oscar.
