Absolver developers announce Kung Fu beat ’em up Sifu

After Absolver’s stylish multiplayer sandbox fight, Sloclap developers announced a return to punching. The next game is Sifu, a beat ’em up inspired by the “classics of kung fu cinema”, starring a young student looking for revenge for the murder of his family. He’ll be punching and kicking in style for a city, as you can see in the ad trailer below.

Hard to not think of the Old Man with that noise from the corridor. This tale of revenge takes place in a fictional Chinese city, playing bad guys in places ranging from dirty streets to corporate towers. And yes, I’m ready for more Sloclap punches.

Our boy Brendy called Absolver one of the best fighting games and it’s, it’s good. Part of Absolver’s joy was building his own moveset, flowing between postures and falling for a cheeky slap as you learned new moves. Sifu’s ad says that players will “unlock unique abilities”, although I suspect they would do a lot of that if Sifu had the complexity of Abosolver. Okay, see, it’s not like Sifu is a sequel.

It is also not clear what is happening with that magic amulet that revives and ages you. “The cost of magic is expensive, however, and you will age significantly each time you come back to life: time is the price you will pay for your revenge,” says the ad. Although if it affects anything other than your appearance, I couldn’t tell you. The game has just been announced, you know. I just hope that if you reach Pai Mei’s age, you will also be able to suck your genitals in with such force that not only attackers cannot kick your dick, but they will also get their feet stuck if they try.

Sifu is due to be released this fall at the Epic Games Store. It will also be on PS5 and PS4.

I am not a kung fu movie fan, but I have enjoyed many of the Shaw brothers’ films. I still think Return To The 36th Chamber has the best concept for a sequel of all time. The first film is a serious case about a legendary monk, so Return is more comical, as the same actor plays a con man pretending to be that monk. It is a lot of fun to use tricks to fake kung fu, until it backfires and he must go to the Shaolin temple to learn the truth from the great man. Delicious.
