Driving an electric vehicle is a lot of fun. They drive super smoothly because, when you accelerate, the car does not have to go through the jerky movement of changing gears. In addition, they also save a lot of money on gas and are great for the environment.
The only problem is the dreaded anxiety of reach. While the most expensive lines of electric cars can cost around 250 miles per charge, more affordable models still remain in the 150-mile range.
This makes road travel difficult because you need to find a fast charger every few hours; then wait for the car to start for 45 minutes or more before leaving for the next hundreds of kilometers. This, of course, if you can find a quick charger.
So for now, that means taking the family on a Clark Griswald-style trip across the country is still a little out of reach for most EV drivers.
However, a coalition made up of six major utility companies has just announced that it wants to make the big trip on American roads possible for drivers of electric vehicles. The Electric Highway Coalition aims to create a continuous network of charging stations connecting the main road systems on the Atlantic Coast, through the Midwest and South, and in the Gulf and Central Plains regions.
“The Edison Electric Institute estimates that 18 million EVs will be on US roads by 2030,” the press release said. “While many drivers recognize the benefits of driving an EV, such as the ease of low-cost domestic charging, some are concerned about the availability of charging stations during long journeys.”
“Over time, travelers have had to figure out how to get from point A to B. From feeding and watering horses, filling gas tanks and now recharging batteries, making sure there are convenient places to perform these tasks is critical,” Nick Akins, chairman of the board, president and CEO of AEP, said in a statement. “With this effort, we are working to help drivers see if (electric vehicles) adapt to their lifestyle and travel plans, wherever the road takes them.”
Although no official map has been presented by the group, it plans to set up charging stations along major highway routes with easy access and amenities for travelers while waiting for a load. The group plans to supply DC chargers that can have drivers at full power in just 20 to 30 minutes.
So, after a few hundred kilometers on the road, you can take the family to a place that resembles a rest stop on the highway, where you can recharge your batteries while having a meal, using the bathroom and stretching your legs a little.

The new initiative also allows people to save a lot on vacation costs. Gas can be expensive when traveling across large areas of the country. Charging an EV is much more economical, although some stations are free, those that cost money can fuel a car with a range of 150 miles for around $ 7.
