The Chicago Police Department said 29-year-old Tracey Thomas Jr. was arrested on Saturday afternoon after allegedly shooting five policemen, hitting one in the hand.
At one point, Thomas was barred and crisis negotiators were called in, CPD said.
The weapon used in the attack was recovered at the scene, police said.
Police said the suspect would appear in the title court on Sunday. CNN is trying to determine whether Thomas has a lawyer.
CPD spokesman Tom Ahern tweeted on Saturday night, “Very grateful that our injured police officer was treated and discharged from the hospital. Another vivid reminder of the inherent dangers that #Chicago police officers face every day.”
Chicago Police Superintendent David O. Brown praised the officers involved.
“I am proud of the members of our SWAT team and officers who peacefully resolved a critical incident with the delivery of the suspect and a recovered firearm. This incident highlights the courage, bravery and dedication of our officers who run into danger every day. “, Brown tweeted Saturday.
Brown said on Sunday that 20 Chicago officials have been shot or shot so far this year.
“Last week was a stark reminder of how dangerous the work of a #Chicago police officer is, with three of our officers being shot and wounded in three separate incidents,” he said on Twitter.
