The 49ers have a horrible poker face.
We all see that they hate your hands. Everyone knows they want to get rid of Jimmy Garoppolo and switch to Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. Which makes both movements complicated.
Let’s say the 49ers get a great deal for Stafford – perhaps the Lions will exchange it for a second round choice in 2021 and a second round choice in 2022 – and the 49ers accept the offer. If so, what would happen to Garoppolo’s commercial value?
He would disappear.
Suddenly, the 49ers would have two expensive veteran defenders on their list and they would be over the limit. A quarterback would have to go – all teams would understand that. Thus, the teams would simply expect the 49ers to release Garoppolo. Forget the offer of draft 49ers choices
And let’s say the 49ers get a great deal for Garoppolo – perhaps the Patriots will offer his choice in the second round in 2021 for him – and the 49ers will accept the offer. If so, what would happen to Stafford’s commercial value?
It would be a sky rocket.
Suddenly, the 49ers would no longer have defenders on contract – they would be desperate for Stafford. And Lions would know that. Thus, they can increase the asking price for a first round choice and a second round choice, or two first round choices. Who knows?
It seems to me that 49ers must acquire Stafford and download Garoppolo at the same time. In the same business.
I’m talking about a three-way trade.
The 49ers could send Jimmy Garoppolo to the Patriots, or some other team. And that team could send a second round pick to Lions. The 49ers could send a second round pick to the Lions. And Lions could send 49ers Stafford.
Who would say no?
