A huge sinkhole opens outside the Naples hospital, forcing the evacuation of patients from Covid

The incident occurred around 6:30 am local time, according to the Ospedale del Mare hospital in Naples. Several vehicles that were parked in the area plunged into the abyss, the local fire department said.

The Naples Police told CNN that “the magistrate has appointed a technical specialist to investigate the causes of the collapse, which may be due to water infiltration due to heavy rains in the past two weeks.”

“The early morning hypothesis that it was an explosion has been ruled out. No injuries or casualties,” added police.

The fire brigade used canine units to check that no one was trapped at the scene.

As a result of the incident, the hospital evacuated six patients from an asymptomatic ward in Covid.

There was also a water fall across the hospital, the press office said. Generators are now providing electricity.

Ospedale del Mare is where the heavily guarded Napoli 1 Covid Center was built using containers in a parking lot during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic, which hit Italy’s healthcare system.
