A gang of squirrels is terrorizing people in New York City – BGR

  • A Queens neighborhood in New York is apparently a hot spot for squirrel attacks, with some residents getting into physical strife with animals.
  • Pictures of a human / squirrel fight show the blood-soaked snow.
  • Residents aren’t sure why squirrels suddenly became violent, but are trying to avoid them until things change.

We are all more than a little stressed these days. This is exactly what happens when the world is in the midst of a deadly pandemic that has changed everyone’s life in many ways. Perhaps our anxious and agitated attitudes are shifting to Mother Nature, because it seems that squirrels have started to openly attack people in New York.

As the CBS WCBS-TV affiliate reports, squirrel attacks have been happening with surprising regularity in a Queens neighborhood, with several people claiming they started fighting with the animals, sometimes resulting in serious injuries.

Queens resident Micheline Frederick says a squirrel attacked her while she was on her own porch. The animal apparently climbed onto its leg and started to bite it. Frederick, who had bruises and cuts after the attack, said her fingers were “chewed” by the squirrel and he refused to let go. When the animal finally gave way, the floor was covered in blood.

“We are fighting in the snow and there is blood everywhere and my fingers are being chewed and he does not give up,” Frederick told WCBS-TV. “Eventually, it just stopped and there I was in a big bloody mess.”

And Frederick is not the only victim of squirrel attacks. Other residents talked about the animals’ strange behavior, saying they tried to climb their legs several times and even jump out of a mailbox to attack. One resident said she was climbing up her garage when a squirrel jumped on her and bit her arm. She managed to get the animal off her before it did any further damage.

It is a very strange set of circumstances, and although your first thought may be that animals must be rabid, it is important to note that rabies in squirrels is very rare. Animals can really be rabies, but they won’t know for sure until they can be caught. In the meantime, some of the squirrel bites were treated against rabies as a precaution.

The victims of the squirrel attacks hired a hunter to catch the animals and relocate them, but at the time of the report none of the squirrels took the bait. For now, local residents will only have to take extra care when they see one of the creatures or try to avoid it entirely. Maybe they’ll be a little bit friendlier when the year goes by. After all, 2020 was difficult for all of us.
