‘A devastating holiday’: 12 greedy Christmas deaths in Onondaga County

Syracuse, NY – Twelve people died in Onondaga County on Christmas Day from the coronavirus, including a 104-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man, county executive Ryan McMahon said today.

This puts the death toll in the county at 407.

“Please pray for your families,” said McMahon on social media.

About a third of county deaths this month have occurred in the past seven days. Of the 166 deaths recorded in December, 58 occurred last week.

Today’s toll included four men, aged 74, 72, 64 and 35 years old.

Five others were women, aged 104, 99, 91 and two 74.

The state tracks deaths in nursing homes and does not release demographic information.

“It is difficult to talk about the positives when we lose 12 neighbors,” tweeted McMahon.

The number of new confirmed cases dropped to 290. Last week, the county registered an average of 308 new cases per day. This is down from the previous seven days, when the county was monitoring an average of 357 new cases per day.

McMahon said the county’s positive daily rate is 4.7%. The seven-day average is 5.5%.

And the hospitalizations seem high, but stable, at the moment. There are 316 people hospitalized in the municipality, just one more than the previous day’s report. Forty-seven people remain in intensive care.

“We need to continue to respect this virus and avoid meetings, stay home when we are sick, walk away and wear a mask,” said McMahon today. “Our efforts since the Thanksgiving wave are working. Let’s double. This will save lives. “
