A 3,000-mile BMW E39 M5 just sold for an outrageous $ 200,000, but why?

The E39 M5 was one of the best steering machines ever built by BMW and is still a solid sports sedan by today’s standards. Given this, it is no surprise that some people are willing to pay good money for one in perfect condition. However, in the case of this one that just sold for $ 200,000 (well, $ 199,990 to be exact), this is taken to a whole new level.

The car was listed for sale by the Enthusiast Auto Group (EAG), a Cincinnati dealership specializing in BMW M cars. Until now, its only owner was a world-renowned jazz pianist who apparently drove the car so little that when it was acquired by the dealership, it only had 3,157 miles on the odometer and its original tires placed. EAG also gave the M5 comprehensive paint correction, internal conditioning and mechanical verification to ensure that its next owner would buy it with museum-quality quality.

So why exactly did he sell for so much? The short answer is because it is rare and in good condition. This M5 was from 2003, the last year of the E39 generation model, which saw the sports sedan at its best, but also one of the shortest runs of any year. Furthermore, few people who bought these cars originally treated them as collector’s items, so there are very few in good condition, let alone in a showroom like this.

Also, if you thought your $ 200,000 selling price seemed absurd, according to the Road and Track interview with EAG owner Eric Keller, he really believes that we could see some E39 M5s go for even more in one not too distant future. That’s because the color of the paint on this car, Carbon Black, was one of the most popular colors for North American models, so he calculates that an example of a similar condition ending in a rarer paint scheme could cost more than a quarter of a million. of dollars, possibly even more depending on what that color is.
