The girl was reported missing in the Chapman St. area of New Carlisle, Indiana, at around 6:30 pm and was found dead about two hours later, according to a press release from the assistant commander of the St County homicide unit. Joseph County, Dave Wells.
New Carlisle is about 15 miles west of South Bend.
An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday, according to the statement.
The department is not disclosing additional names or details at the moment, Wells said.
The police are asking anyone with information about the case to call the homicide unit while the investigation is underway.
Neighbors who live in the complex near the woods where the girl was found considered the incident “disturbing”.
“Very disturbing, very scary, nowadays with things happening you don’t know what’s going to happen. It can happen anywhere, anytime, ”neighbor Allie Sadler told CNN affiliate WBND. “I think everything is very quiet around here.”
