A woman in the US state of Utah died four days after receiving her second dose of the Modern COVID-19 vaccine, local media reported on Wednesday.
Kassidi Kurill, a 39-year-old single mother, received her second dose on February 1 and died on February 5, local broadcaster 2News said in a report on the vaccine’s side effects.
While the autopsy results are pending, Kurill’s family told the news channel that she had no known health problems or pre-existing conditions.
Her condition started to worsen the day after the injection and she went to a local hospital three days later, the report said.
“They did a blood test and came back immediately and said that she was very, very sick and that her liver was not working,” her father told the news channel.
Kurill was transferred to a trauma center in Murray City for a liver transplant, but her condition worsened and she died on Friday morning, the report said.
Side effects of the vaccine are common, but the resulting deaths are rare, according to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) of the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
On March 8, more than 92 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines were administered in the United States, and VAERS received only 1,637 reports of death – 0.0018% – among people who received an injection.
“To date, VAERS has not detected patterns of cause of death that indicate a safety problem with the COVID-19 vaccines,” said the CDC on its website.
