If last year showed anything, it is that Samsung is finally taking Android updates seriously, both large and small. Now, we’re getting some clarification on Samsung’s long-term support, specifically Samsung’s last year of Android update support.
Starting this year, Samsung is offering four years of support to almost its entire library of Galaxy smartphones and tablets, something that is practically unprecedented in Android. However, it is not four years of support that you see at launch. Instead, things slow down after the second year and then continue into the fourth year.
It is that fourth year about which Samsung was not very explicit. Samsung’s official security update page promised only “regular” security updates for some devices. This can mean monthly, bimonthly, yearly or really anything in between. Now, while the people at Android Police detected, Samsung updated this page to clarify that these updates are semiannual.
Two updates a year is nothing to be happy about, but it is definitely much better than nothing. Samsung does not say when these two updates are due, but Samsung would take advantage of this by providing the final update at the end of the fourth year of support. Currently, about 35 devices are receiving semi-annual updates, most including devices released in 2017 and 2018.
