Here’s Elden Ring’s proposal: you need to play Dark Souls and mix it with the narrative and the construction of the world War of Thrones. The nextPlaystation 4The game for Xbox One and PC is being developed by FromSoftware, the studio behind Dark Souls and Bloodborne, with the help of George RR Martin himself.
We don’t know much about the title. Elden Ring was announced in 2019
, but we’ve heard little about it since. Interest in the game has been buoyant, however, thanks to a newly leaked trailer and a handful of details that have not yet been confirmed by FromSoftware.
What do we know for sure?
Elden Ring was revealed at E3 2019, with a trailer being shown during Microsoft’s presentation. It depicts a brutal and cruel fantasy scenario while a narrator explains that chaos has been forged since “someone or something” destroyed Elden’s Ring. But we had few details, other than the guarantee that the game would be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. No release window was provided.
In an interview published on Xbox’s official website at E3 that year, FromSoftware president and director of Elden Ring, Hidetaka Miyazaki, released more details. Game development started in 2017 after the release of the Dark Souls 3 Ringed City DLC and will be a third-person role-playing game with more RPG elements than action.
“This title will include a wide variety of weapons, magic and ways to face enemies, which make it possible to provide users with a style of play and strategy that suits them,” said Miyazaki at the time. “Even when compared to the Dark Souls series, I believe that this title will offer even more variety in the ways that players can overcome challenges and adjust their tactics when facing enemies.”
Later in the interview, he noted that the biggest difference between Elden Ring and Dark Souls is that the next title will be open world.
What is the involvement of George RR Martin?
Miyazaki and the FromSoftware team are responsible for writing Elden Ring’s narrative, but have outsourced the world, tradition and myths to Martin. With Elden Ring being a much bigger game than Dark Souls, building the world is more crucial than in previous FromSoftware titles. A bigger game needs more characters, cultures and locations, and Martin has been recruited to make them more meaningful.
“[Martin’s] mythos proved to be full of interesting characters and drama, along with a plethora of mystical and mysterious elements as well. It was a wonderful source of encouragement for me and the development team, “said Miyazaki.” Elden Ring’s world was built using this myth and stimulus as a basis. Even I find it difficult to contain my excitement from time to time. “
In a subsequent interview, Miyazaki added that the people who worked on the TV show Game of Thrones also helped build Elden Ring’s world.
What leaked?
After more than 18 months of near silence on the radio, which was a special disappointment at last year’s Game Awards, a trailer for Elden Ring leaked in early March. A 112-second clip with a large watermark shows more of the world of Elden Ring and the demonic creatures that inhabit it. Most importantly, he showed glimpses of combat in the game, including from a horse.
The leak drove fans of Dark Souls wild. The community gathered clips from different leaks and even enlarged the images to HD. The footage is supposedly from 2020. An unverified industry member with a history of reliable leaks said the trailer was for internal purposes. In addition, they added that Elden Ring will have player-to-player multiplayer as well as an in-game weather system.
When the game will be released and it will arrive on PS5 and Xbox Series X | S?
The answer to both questions is that no one knows. It was speculated that the Elden Ring would be launched in 2020 and later in 2021. It was reported that the complications of COVID-19 interrupted development, causing delays. In short, the Elden Ring’s release date is “TBA”.
As for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S, it seems highly likely that the game will appear on the new consoles, even if it is only the PS4 / Xbox One / PC version running more smoothly and at a higher resolution. That said, this has also not been confirmed.
