While next-generation flagship processor needs, such as the Realme GT, are well met with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset, we’re still waiting to know what 2021 midrange Android phones will be running – and the new ones have leaked Snapdragon 775 and 775G could give us an answer.
As revealed by informant XiaomiUI on Telegram, the two chips are supposed to have the reference number SM7350 and will be the successors to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765 and 765G (the G indicates slightly better gaming performance).
The Snapdragon 765 series was used on devices such as the OnePlus Nord and Google Pixel 5, offering powerful performance without adding as much to the price of a device as the premium Snapdragon 865 CPU.
It looks like the Snapdragon 775 and 775G will be deployed in the same way, which makes us question whether this new chipset will make an appearance on Google Pixel 6, as well as on many other high-end to mid-range Android devices during 2021.
House in the middle lane
According to sources speaking to XDA Developers, the leaked specs for the Snapdragon 775 and 775G are not fully updated, so don’t take anything here as an official until Qualcomm comes out and actually confirms.
The Snapdragon 775 series must be manufactured using a 5 nanometer process, compared to the 7 nm used by its predecessor Snapdragon 765 – which should equal better performance with less battery consumption.
The chip can also support up to three 28MP cameras simultaneously, and may also be able to capture 4K video at 60 frames per second. As expected, the 5G will be compatible with phones running the Snapdragon 775 and 775G.
If and when the chipset is officially announced, we look forward to the devices that will take advantage of it – performance close to the top level for a mid-range price is an attractive combination for a smartphone, and the Snapdragon 775 series should help provide.
