“It was like he was trying to humiliate me on purpose.”
Paris Hilton revisited two uncomfortable public appearances from the time she was sentenced to prison in 2007: Sarah Silverman fighting with her at the MTV Movie Awards the night before her check-in and David Letterman interrogating her about her time behind bars when she left .
Both topics came up in the last episode of Hilton’s “This Is Paris” podcast, which featured her sister, Nicky Hilton. After Nicky mentioned that she had just watched the “Framing Britney Spears” documentary, co-host Hunter March said the doc led to many old interviews with young stars being seen in a new light – including Hilton’s appearance in Letterman .
In 2007, Hilton was sentenced to 45 days behind bars for violating his probation for driving with a suspended license. After three days, she was placed under house arrest, before being taken back to prison. In the end, she served 22 days.
During the 2007 appearance, Letterman continued to ask Hilton about her recent prison sentence – even after she said she didn’t want to talk about it anymore. She seems uncomfortable with the line of questioning and even says to him at one point, “You are making me sad for coming. You are hurting my feelings.”
Talking to her sister about the interview, she claimed that her public relations team told her staff that questions about the prison were “off limits” and that she would only talk about her latest perfume and other commercial ventures. “I felt it was a safe place because I had been using Letterman for so many years. I thought he would keep his word about it and he was wrong, ”she explained. “There wasn’t supposed to be a question and he kept pushing me and pushing me. I was getting really uncomfortable and upset.”
“Nicky, you were backstage, I remember talking to you afterwards and being up there, it was like he was trying to humiliate me on purpose and during commercial breaks I looked at him like, please stop doing that, you promised me that you wouldn’t do “I don’t talk about it and that’s the only reason I agreed to come to the show,” she said. “He was fine and then again [brought it up]. It was very cruel and stingy. After it was over I looked at him and said I would never go back to that program, it crossed the line. I didn’t scold him because I’m not that kind of person, but I was angry and he was apologizing and sent a box of Chateau Lafite Rothschild wine to our house. “
She added that she was “in tears, crying and shaking” after the appearance, but ended up forgiving him after he “continued to apologize” and reportedly sent letters and made several calls to his team. “Finally, I said okay, I’m going back to your show. I said okay and I forgave you,” she added, saying the accompanying appearance was “much better.”
“He knew he shouldn’t be doing it again,” she added. “I think he felt bad. I heard that a lot of people were angry that they saw it, even then. I am very happy that today is different.”
When she appeared on his show again in 2008, he apologized profusely and presented her with flowers. After saying that people told him that he acted like an “idiot” in the previous interview, he added: “I have offended you. Honestly, I am not here to make enemies. I am very sorry.”
A Letterman representative told TooFab that they had nothing to add other than the 2008 apology.

Although Nicky said she thought it was a “fair game” for him to ask about his prison sentence, she didn’t like how he kept insisting. She then said that Paris went through many things that would not happen today, bringing out Sarah Silverman’s jokes at her expense at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards.
“Do you know what wouldn’t happen today? Sarah Silverman is taking the stage at the MTV Awards and making disgusting, vile and perverted statements about pop stars, the people sitting in the audience,” she said.
During his opening monologue, Silverman took aim at Hilton. “Paris Hilton is going to jail,” she exclaimed, receiving much applause from the public. “I heard that, to make her feel comfortable in prison, the guards are going to paint the bars to look like a penis. I just worry if she’ll break her teeth on these things.”
“What Sarah Silverman did was so disgusting and cruel and mean,” said Hilton, looking back now. “I was so shocked and surprised because I actually met her a few years earlier, when she was at an event, she couldn’t be nicer, so sweet. I was obviously very nervous, I went to the MTV Awards, I knew I was about to go in. in prison in a few hours … trying to be brave and then sit in the audience with her, literally publicly humiliating me, being so mean, so cruel, I was sitting there wanting to die. “
“I was trying to hold my tears so tightly. I had tears welling up in my eyes, I literally wanted to run out of the entire room,” she continued. “It wouldn’t stop. It was so painful, so having someone so mean about it was really difficult.”

Silverman has since expressed regret for his comments, especially after seeing the reaction to his joke.
“I had no moral qualms, in theory, to joke about the incarceration of Paris – that’s what night talk show hosts have been doing for weeks,” she wrote in her book “The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption, and Urine.” “But getting her to be mocked in the face by thousands of people live on television during the most vulnerable and frightening moment of her life – needless to say, it took the fun out of the ‘good fun’ essence I intended. “
She added that she felt “terribly guilty” at the time and even wrote a letter to Paris, who was now behind bars. During his podcast, however, Hilton said he had never spoken to Silverman since that show.
TooFab contacted Silverman’s representative for comment.
Paris went on to say that he was able to overcome even the most humiliating moments like these because he had already gone through “hell” as a teenager, referring to the alleged abuse he suffered as a teenager in a private boarding school.
“I think going through something like this made me very strong and almost like I’m used to it,” she added. “Which is sad to think. I think if I hadn’t been through this, I don’t know where I would be.”
