Golf icon Tiger Woods was driving a Genesis GV80 SUV on Monday when he was involved in a single vehicle accident in Los Angeles, authorities and Genesis confirmed to FOX Business.
Woods “underwent a long surgical procedure on his right leg and ankle after being taken to the hospital,” according to a statement posted on his Twitter account. The vehicle suffered major damage.
“Genesis was sad to hear that Tiger Woods had an accident in a GV80,” Dana White, director of communications for Genesis Motor North America, told FOX Business in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Tiger and his family right now, as we wish him a full and quick recovery.”

Woods was in Los Angeles over the weekend as host of the Genesis Invitational tournament at the Riviera Country Club, where he handed over the trophy on Sunday.

Genesis – the luxury brand of Korean automaker Hyundai – lent the professional golfer the SUV GV80 for the duration of his stay in the city. Tournament winner Max Homa also received a new Genesis GV80.

The 2021 Genesis GV80 has a starting price of $ 48,900. The car contains a 300 horsepower engine, a 14.5-inch horizontal touch screen on the center console and an eight-inch digital instrument panel. It has 10 airbags, a frontal collision warning system, evasive steering technology and an internal camera to alert drivers if they are falling asleep.
LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said at a news conference on Tuesday that the vehicle’s security devices may have saved the player’s life.
“The vehicle cabin was more or less intact, the front completely destroyed – the bumpers, everything destroyed, the airbags deployed – all of that,” he said. “However, fortunately, the interior was more or less intact, which gave him the protection to survive what would have otherwise been a fatal accident.”

The GV80, launched in 2021, is the first SUV from Genesis and comes equipped with the “first Smart Cruise Control in the world”, which uses machine learning technology, or artificial intelligence, to “understand” the individual driving styles of drivers , according to Genesis’ Internet site.
The website notes that Smart Cruise Control is for highway use only and “is not a collision avoidance or warning device”.

The vehicle also has “Assistance to avoid collisions in blind spots”, which alerts drivers of other cars in your region of blind spots; “Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist”, which helps to detect slow or stationary vehicles, as well as pedestrians, in front of the driver; and a driver attention warning that gives the driver “visual or audible alerts” when the vehicle feels that the driver must “rest for safety reasons”.
The Insurance Institute for Road Safety (IIHS) selected the Genesis G70 Sedan and the G90 Sedan as two of its 2020 “Top Safety Picks”. IIHS has not yet revised the GV80 and Consumer Reports is currently doing so.

Woods was apparently traveling at high speed and lost control of the vehicle before crossing a central partition, anonymous law sources told the Los Angeles Times. Woods’ SUV reportedly ran several times before stopping.
The sources added that Woods had to be removed through the car’s windshield. The front of the SUV looked badly damaged.

The authorities did not reveal the cause of the accident. An ambulance took Woods to a hospital in serious condition and a traffic investigation is being conducted by LASD Lomita Station.

“Mr. Woods suffered significant orthopedic injuries to his right lower extremity that were treated during emergency surgery by orthopedic trauma specialists,” said Anish Mahajan, medical director at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where the legendary golfer was treated after the accident, Woods said in a shared statement on Twitter.
Mahajan’s statement continued: “Comminuted open fractures that affect the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibular bones have been stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia. Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle have been stabilized with a combination of screws and pins. Trauma to the muscle and soft tissue of the leg required surgical release of the muscle cover to relieve pressure due to swelling. “
