The current Made by Google line is visually defined by a front camera in the upper left corner of the screen. You get used to the weather, but those who care about the Pixel 5’s punch can now hide it on Android 12.
Android 12 Developer Preview 1 adds (via Android Police) a new “Hide” option to the “View clipping” menu available in “Design” – just over half the screen – in “Developer options”.
Activation applies a black bar to the status bar that works to partially hide the punch of the Pixel 4a, 4a 5G and 5’s. The time, notifications and other system icons remain in place with the new darker background.
Currently, there are some bugs in the implementation, especially on the Pixel Launcher home screen, but they should be resolved as previews continue.
This option exists mainly for developers, while Pixel 5 owners seeing visual problems in applications due to the drilled hole are best served by contacting these developers directly to fix it. That said, Android 12 offers a possible solution for those who are bothered by hacking.
The developer options menu is enabled by going to Settings> About phone and tapping “Version number” at the bottom of the screen seven times. After that, visit Settings> System> Advanced to access.
