“As a country musician, I’ve always been told it’s better to stay out [politics]. The Trump presidency forced me to lean in and educate myself, “Taylor told Vanity Fair.

As she learned more about her position, Taylor says she started talking to Joe about her political views.

“I found myself talking about government, presidency and politics with my boyfriend, who supported me in speaking openly,” Taylor wrote in his interview with the magazine.

And in October 2018, Taylor did just that by supporting Democratic candidate Phil Bredesen in the race for the Tennessee Senate.

“I am proud to have overcome fear and doubt and to endorse and support the leadership that moves us beyond this divisive and heartbreaking moment,” added Taylor.

Although Bredesen did not win the seat, his defeat and a series of other disappointing political moments inspired Taylor to write his politically charged track “Only The Young” in the hope of encouraging others to fight for what they believe to be right.

“I didn’t want the defeat and hopelessness I felt for the future of our country to get the best of me. I didn’t want to cry. I wanted to hope. Writing ‘Only the Young’ helped me to get over that moment in my life and gave me the hope of continuing to fight for what I believe is right, ”he explained to the magazine.

The moving banner addresses sensitive issues, including armed violence in schools, the results of the 2016 elections and the constant flood of bad news.

“You go to class, scared / Wondering where the best hiding place would be / And the big bad man and his big bad clan / Your hands are stained red,” sings Taylor on the floor.

“This particular song, and the process of creating it, was a perfect example of how visceral a composition can be. [With songwriting] you try to transport yourself to a time when you felt intense emotion and write from that place. Every once in a while, you end up in the studio at the exact moment you are feeling that raw emotion, “Taylor shared.
