He was definitely skating on thin ice.
An ice skater had an icy surprise when he went to the frozen, er semi-frozen canals in Amsterdam to show their movements.
In a viral clip that has been viewed more than 7 million times, a man wearing only tiny shorts is seen skating on the famous canals in front of a large crowd.
The ice suddenly breaks beneath him and he dives into the icy waters. Seeming to be unhurt, except perhaps for his pride, the man shouts to the crowd, “Plant expensive!”
He finally gets help from some spectators, a rope and athletics as he pulls himself out of the ice trap and bows.
The video was captioned with the hashtag “ijs niet overal goed” or “ice is not good everywhere”.
The unlucky skater was not the only one to find himself skating on thin ice, however, another video posted by the Guardian News showed several skaters being rescued from the canals.
The big skating turnaround occurred because the channels froze for the first time in three years, according to the agency. A rare “red code” was also issued during the Darcy storm, the first snowstorm to hit Holland in a decade.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has even warned ice skaters to distance themselves socially and avoid injuries if possible, so as not to fill the hospital rooms needed by COVID patients.
With the expectation that temperatures will return to normal over the weekend, ice skating is likely to drop.
