Rotating outages underway in Texas following the issuance of the Level 3 Energy Emergency Alert, says ERCOT

The Texas Electric Reliability Council (ERCOT) issued a Power Emergency Alert (Level 3) to the state, meaning that rotating outages are underway to reduce demand in the electrical system.

“We ask Texans to put security first during this period,” said ERCOT in a tweet on Monday morning.

ERCOT says that traffic lights and other infrastructure may be temporarily without power.

ERCOT asked Texans to reduce electricity usage before sending the level 3 energy emergency alert tweet. It had warned that rotating outages would be necessary to protect the electrical system.

Here’s how you can help reduce electricity use, according to ERCOT:

  • Set the thermostats to 68 degrees at home, or as low as comfortably tolerable.

  • Set the ceiling fans to the winter setting by turning them clockwise to pull the hot air down.

  • Avoid using large appliances (for example, ovens, washing machines and dishwashers).

  • Make sure the doors and windows are properly sealed. Any light through the door indicates a penetration of cold air entering the house.

  • Turn off lights, computers and other electronic devices whenever possible.
