Pence, who plans to remain hidden during the impeachment trial, has not yet fixed his relationship with Trump after what happened, according to a source familiar with the situation.
The source said that Pence and Trump “discussed everything” that happened on January 6. But at the time, the source said, the two men were more focused on just reaching January 20 – Induction Day.
“He made his point at the meeting later,” said the source about Pence, noting that there were some lingering resentments. Trump expressed no remorse for putting Pence in an agonizing situation at the meeting, the source added.
“This is not his style,” said the source.
But the source said the two men are likely to be able to move on after the events around January 6.
“Time will heal things,” predicted the source.
Another clip shown by Democratic House managers showed a Capitol Police officer directing Senator Mitt Romney, R-Utah, away from the crowd.
A former Romney adviser noted that the officer is likely to have saved the senator from serious injury or worse.
“But by the grace of God,” said the former adviser.
As for the siege, an adviser said Trump wanted to see a show of strength from his supporters that day.
“Trump likes strength,” said one adviser. “He saw people fighting hard for him,” added the adviser.
This is in line with what a former senior White House official told CNN about Trump’s reaction to the siege. The official said Trump was “loving” watching the crowd.
What’s wrong seems to be at the heart of the Trump team’s response to the case presented by the House’s impeachment managers. Advisers to the former president spent much of the day posting old videos of some of the impeachment managers using phrases like “fight like hell”.
The only problem is that there was no uprising that followed when Democrats engaged in this type of rhetoric.
A source close to Trump, who discussed the impeachment case with him, acknowledged that the facts are “very bad” for the former president.
The source told CNN that the new video was “undeniably powerful”. When asked if Trump has any remorse, the source laughed and said that for Trump there is no greater offense than saying “sorry”. The source added that Democrats realize that they may not be able to condemn Trump and prevent him from running again, so they are doing the second best thing: influencing public opinion to the point where he cannot run again.
