How it all started … how it’s going: Phil Foden shares a photo of a ball boy days after Liverpool’s heroism

How it all started … how it’s going: Phil Foden shares a backward image of himself as a goalkeeper in Etihad alongside one of his brilliant fourth goals in Manchester City’s impressive victory over Liverpool

  • Manchester City beat Liverpool 4-1 at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday
  • Phil Foden crowned a brilliant performance by scoring his team’s fourth goal
  • The midfielder has established himself as one of the best young players in the world

Phil Foden was the star of the show in Manchester City’s 4-1 victory over Liverpool on Sunday, and he used Twitter to remind fans how far he has come after the game.

The 20-year-old crowned a beautiful performance by scoring his team’s fourth goal by securing his first victory at Anfield in 18 years.

He then shared two photos side by side, one of him as a goalkeeper in a City game in 2014 and one of him scoring his goal against the Reds.

Following the recent social media trend, he put the caption ‘how it started … how it’s going’.

The Liverpool title defense seems to have ended in the hands of goalkeeper Alisson Becker, as two terrible mistakes helped City to their big win.

With the game balanced at 1-1, with 17 minutes left, the Brazilian international’s wandering pass gave the league leaders two goals – including Raheem Sterling’s first at Anfield since his departure in 2015.

Alisson was back on the team after losing his midweek defeat to Brighton due to illness, but he will be sick to see his participation in City’s first win in this field since 2003 and only the second in 34 visits.

Mohamed Salah’s penalty on 63 minutes – ending a drought at home nine minutes before seven o’clock – annulled Ilkay Gundogan’s opening goal, which was redeemed after losing a penalty in the first half.

Alisson then gave a straight pass to Phil Foden, who advanced and crossed for Gundogan scoring nine goals in his last 11 league games.

The worst was yet to come, as the Brazilian repeated the mistake even closer to the goal, with Bernardo Silva giving Sterling a start and waving his 100th goal to Pep Guardiola, with Foden putting the finishing touches.

Victory extended City’s winning streak to 14 games and left Liverpool with 10 points after having played yet another game and even in this season of surprises a return from that position seems unlikely.

It meant that Gundogan’s penalty missed at the end of the first half – City’s third this season and third in four attempts in this game – and Guardiola kicking a bucket of frustration was a distant memory
