The intruder, accused of trespassing, had two arrest warrants for theft and was handed over to local authorities. He may have suffered from mental health problems at the time and “it didn’t feel right,” according to an Air Force officer.

“The security of our facility is paramount,” said Col. Roy Oberhaus, deputy commander of Wing 316 at Andrews Joint Base. “This was a serious security breach and Andrews Joint Base is investigating the incident to determine how it happened so that it doesn’t happen again.”

The C-40 plane that the man boarded was involved in a daytime drainage exercise, and he told authorities “that he just wanted to see a plane”.

The 89th Airlift Wing’s C-40 plane “provides safe, comfortable and reliable transportation for US leaders”, including combat commanders, cabinet secretaries and members of Congress.

President Joe Biden is scheduled to leave Andrews Joint Base for Delaware at 5:15 pm ET, Friday, which will be his first trip on Air Force One as president.
