Google Meet adds ‘green room’ to view your video

After adding a “Troubleshooting” menu last month, Google Meet now has a “green room” before the video call to “quickly see how you will appear to others before joining”. Available on the desktop web, it allows you to check the status of peripherals and the network.

You can use this new functionality to confirm that peripheral devices are properly configured and fixed, to verify that network connectivity is good, and to understand the impact of noise cancellation on audio (if available for your account).

Before entering a meeting, there is a new “Check your audio and video” button below your video feed. This “green room” opens a camera window almost in full screen and lists “Your devices” below. You can choose between different microphones, speakers and cameras. It allows you to view the best configuration and capture:

  • A microphone without sound involuntarily
  • A secondary monitor without a headset or speaker connection
  • Other audio issues, such as poor sound, very loud audio, or background noise amplified by the microphone

If problems are detected, Google Meet will provide troubleshooting tips and steps, such as “grant your browser permission to use the microphone or camera”.

This video preview of Google Meet is now being launched for the following users, as well as personal accounts in our tests:

Available for Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus, as well as customers of G Suite Basic, Business, Education, Enterprise for Education and non-profit organizations
