Legendary actor Denzel Washington, whose career includes Man on Fire, Training Day, Remember the Titans and Malcolm X, recently declared his support for the American police and soldiers.
Washington’s comments were made during a conversation with Yahoo Entertainment about his upcoming film, The Little Things, in which he plays Joe ‘Deke’ Deacon, a disgraced Los Angeles County sheriff detective who hunts a serial killer.
Washington declared, “I have the utmost respect for what they do, what our soldiers do, [people] who sacrifice their lives. “
He added: “I just don’t care about people who demote that kind of person. If it weren’t for them, we wouldn’t be free to complain about what they do ”.
His appreciation of law enforcement came when he accompanied a law enforcement agency while making preparations for the 1991 movie Ricochet, where he played Nick Styles, a police officer who became a public prosecutor.
Washington explained: “I went on duty with a sergeant. We got a call from a man outside his house with a rifle that was desperate. We stopped and made a U-turn past the house and got close to the house. He told me to sit in the car, which I was going to do. I was not leaving. He left. When he got out, another car came screaming and two young people jumped up screaming. It turns out he was their grandfather. This policeman neutralized the whole situation just by remaining calm. “
“But it showed me in an instant how they can lose their lives. … he didn’t overdo it. He could have pulled his gun and shot people who came driving too fast. He could have shot the old man who was upset and a little confused, I think he was suffering a little dementia. But in an instant it taught me, and I never forgot, what our law enforcement personnel have to deal with moment by moment, second by second, ”he added.
Washington neutralized its own intense situation last year. A video shared on social media shows the actor talking to a man and two policemen.
As reported by USA Today, Washington saw the man while driving and decided to pull over because he was concerned about his safety. He then helped the man to get to the side of the street. Another witness then called the police.
One of the policemen described the situation saying: “We intervened, talked to the individual and determined that he did not want to harm himself or others, and he was on his way and Denzel left.”
The officer added: “Denzel gave him a mask to protect himself from the environment and that was a good thing. So Denzel helped us today. “
The official also described Washington as a “very good Samaritan”.
What do you think of Washington’s comments about the police and soldiers? Do you think he will face any reaction to these comments, given the emergence of the Black Lives Matter and his call to strip the police across the country throughout 2020?
