COLOMBIA, SC (AP) – The South Carolina House passed a bill on Thursday to reinstate some teacher increases in this year’s budget.
The project would restore the “gradual increase” increases for teachers, which amount to several hundred dollars a year given annually as teachers gain experience. Lawmakers stopped wage increases last spring due to uncertainty about what the pandemic COVID-19 could do to the economy.
Lawmakers approved measure 118-0. The bill faces a final vote in the House before being referred to the Senate.
The account would devote up to $ 50 million to restoring the increases for the current school year. Teachers would receive the money in a single portion of their school districts by June 15.
