President Joe Biden said in an interview on Monday that it looks like Democrats will not be able to convict former President Trump – again – during an impeachment trial.
His comments are likely a blow to Democrats and came at a time when House Democrats presented an impeachment article to the Senate on Monday night.
QUICK FACTS
- Trump will be tried weeks after the House voted to impeach him on a single charge of “inciting insurrection”.
- The trial itself is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, February 9, weeks after Trump’s last day in office.
Trump’s Republican denunciations have cooled since the January 6 riot on Capitol Hill. Instead, Republicans are presenting a tangle of legal arguments against the legitimacy of the trial and questioning whether Trump’s repeated demands to overthrow Joe Biden’s election really constituted an incitement.
