Texas quarterback Deshaun Watson was unhappy this season when he suggested that the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy be interviewed for the team’s vacancy and the Texans left him off the list. But just because the Texans later reversed course and interviewed Bieniemy, that doesn’t mean Watson can be appeased.
According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, Watson wants to leave Houston and that will not change, regardless of who Texans hire to be the next coach.
This could make it difficult for Texans to get any major candidate to take the job. If Watson isn’t there, the Texans job is one of the least attractive spots in the NFL in years. Texans are a bad team, without much in the way of loot capital or salary limits to improve. The only thing that would make the job attractive to a coach is that Watson, one of the best defenders in the NFL, is there.
If the Texans offer Bieniemy the job, he may decide that it is better to stay in Kansas City, where Patrick Mahomes is executing his attack, than to go to Houston, where he does not know who his quarterback would be.
The off-season in Houston is ugly and the situation does not appear to be improving.
