Senator Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., Said on Wednesday that he has “serious concerns” about President Biden interrupting the construction of ex-President Trump’s wall along the southern border, claiming that the reversal of the administration policy of Trump “will give rise to an increase in the flow of drugs and human trafficking.”
On his first day in office, Biden ended the national emergency declaration issued by Trump that was used to divert $ 10 billion from the Department of Defense to build the wall. About 455 miles of border wall were built under Trump.
“I have serious concerns about President Biden’s executive order to stop building a wall along the southwestern border,” Tuberville said in a statement. “In the past four years, we have witnessed the effectiveness of more than 400 miles of new physical barriers to curb illegal border crossings, assisting our border patrol agents in law enforcement and impacting daily seizure rates. The fact that the government pauses in these efforts sends the exact and wrong message to our opponents and those who seek to enter this country illegally. “
The White House said Biden was issuing an “immediate pause” in the construction of the wall “to allow a detailed review of the legality of the financing and contracting methods used and to determine the best way to redirect funds that were diverted by the previous administration. to finance the construction of the wall. ”
Tuberville disapproved of the change.
“If we stop protecting our border effectively, we will see American jobs affected at a time when we need to get Americans back into the job market. Not to mention that a poorly protected border will give rise to an increase in the flow of drugs and trafficking in persons – two issues on the rise in our country, ”he said. “If President Biden really cares about putting American workers back on their feet after the pandemic and protecting our country, he will reconsider that decision and commit to enforcing the laws passed by Congress.”
