FOOTHILL FARMS (CBS13) – A woman from Foothill Farms is dead and her adult son is under arrest for allegedly killing her inside her apartment Tuesday night.
The confrontation led to a massive response from Sacramento County sheriff deputies, who exchanged shots with the suspect before he surrendered.
The sheriff’s office says deputies were called to the house on block 5400 on Auburn Boulevard for a domestic dispute between relatives. When the police arrived at the scene, they said shots were fired from inside an apartment. The deputies responded to the fire and retreated, creating a situation of impasse.
Linda Elmore says she was in the halls when the police told her to go back to her unit for her own safety.
“Huge,” said Elmore. “I’ve never seen so many police cars at the same time.”
Around 6 pm, the sheriff’s office warned the public to stay away from the area while negotiators responded to the scene. On a tweet, the sheriff’s office said there was a “large police presence on block 5400 on Auburn Blvd for an armed and barricaded guy.”
The mother and another family member called the sheriff’s office for help.
Leslie Marinello lives in the apartment complex for the elderly and heard the shots from inside her home.
“Oh man, yes, when they exploded, it was like a hundred at a time, I never heard anything like it,” said Marinello.
The deputies ended up calling a hostage negotiator and the suspect surrendered. The violent confrontation came just a day after the deputy sheriff was killed in the line of duty.
“At the end of the day, deputies put aside what has happened in the past few days and go out and do what these professionals do,” said Sacramento Sergeant Sheriff Rod Grassman.
The suspect in this shooting was taken to a hospital with what is described as a superficial gunshot wound. The Sacramento Sheriff’s Department did not immediately identify him.
