Progressive congressmen Alexandria Ocaio-Cortez of New York and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota asked Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri to resign on Friday because of the Capitol riot – and a new poll shows that most of his voters want let him step down immediately.
Pro-Trump protests turned to chaos when armed supporters stormed the Capitol building after violent clashes with authorities on January 6. The attack left five dead, including a Capitol police officer. Hawley faced an intense reaction for being the first Republican senator to publicly support President Donald Trump’s challenge on the results of the 2020 elections.
As he prepared to contest the Congress that certified President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, Hawley was photographed raising his fist at the demonstrators on the east side of the Capitol at the time.
“Hey Sen @HawleyMO, I hate to break it for you, but this is actually you. You raised your fist in solidarity with the white supremacists who attacked our Capitol, “Ocasio-Cortez tweeted.” Although you may politically regret what you have revealed about yourself, it still has no place in public office. Resign.”

Omar echoed Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks. “Resign!” she tweeted.
Democrats called Hawley “insurrectional” for supporting Trump’s unverified allegations of widespread electoral fraud and for opposing Congress that certifies the results of the Electoral College.
A Data for Progress poll, which surveyed 571 prospective Missouri voters from January 10 to 12, found that 51% of respondents in the state wanted Hawley to “resign immediately” – including 91% of Democrats, 52% of independents and 20% of Republicans. Meanwhile, 49% of respondents did not think that Hawley should resign.
Protesters gathered in front of Hawley’s Missouri office on Tuesday, as the reaction against the legislature grew in his home state after the Capitol insurrection.
The American Federation of Government Officials (AFGE), a labor union, organized the demonstration, during which citizens called for Hawley’s resignation.
According to the KSDK, some protesters said the Republican had “blood on his hands”.
The event came days after the Kansas City Star accused Hawley of having “blood on his hands”. Democratic Congresswoman Cori Bush of Missouri also tweeted last week “you don’t speak for us … you have blood on your hands”.
In addition, Steve Schmidt, co-founder of the Lincoln Project, announced this week that the group will launch a campaign aimed at cutting donations to Hawley.
In a tweet on Tuesday, Schmidt said, “We will be buying full-page ads in Missouri newspapers listing all Hawley donors demanding their money back. We will also be buying advertising focused on Hawleys’ ongoing funders. [sic] insurrection and sedition. “
Last week, Hawley’s office said it “would never apologize for giving voice to the millions of Missourians and Americans who care about the integrity of our elections”.
The senator also condemned the violent siege of the Capitol: “In this country, in the United States of America, we cannot say with enough emphasis that violence is not the way to achieve change … There is no place for that in the United States of America . “
Newsweek he held out his hand to Hawley for comment.
