The chip shortage isn’t just hurting your access to CPUs and GPUs – it’s hurting the auto market, too. CNBC, ABC news and The Verge report that Ford and Nissan are slowing production in response to a shortage of semiconductors. Ford is shutting down an SUV plant in Louisville, Kentucky, this week, increasing downtime previously scheduled for the end of 2021. Nissan, meanwhile, is reducing production at its Oppama plant in Japan.
Other brands may also face problems. Volkswagen said in December that it was changing production in China, Europe and North America due to the shortage. Fiat Chrysler and Toyota also talked about production issues. GM did not have to cut production, said spokesman David Barnas CNBC, but keep an eye out for problems related to the chip.
