Disney + ‘s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star Olivia Rodrigo released her new single, “Drivers License” on January 8, and the internet is sure of what (or rather, who) it is. “Drivers License”, which came with an emotionally visceral music video, is about a breakup that sounds terribly familiar. Fans are speculating that the song is about Joshua Bassett, whom Olivia was rumored to be dating while they were filming the Disney + series.
What happened to Joshua Bassett and Olivia Rodrigo?
Fans believed in Joshua Bassett and Olivia Rodrigo, who played the couple Ricky and Nini on screen High School Musical by-product, dated and then separated in 2020. In August 2020, Olivia posted a video on TikTok that showed her playing “All I Want” from HSMTMTS soundtrack. “And that in failed relationships,” she captioned TikTok.
In “Driver’s License” there are several clues as to what happened between them – and it seems that Sabrina Carpenter has something to do with it.

Joshua and Sabrina would have dated after he and Olivia broke up. In November, Joshua posted a TikTok featuring him and Sabrina dressed as Sharkboy and Lavagirl, which could mean the two were quarantined together. Olivia sings about a “blonde girl” who intimidated her in “Driver’s License”, which many interpret as Sabrina, who has blond hair.

“And you are probably with that blonde girl / Who always made me doubt / She is much older than me / She is everything that makes me insecure,” Olivia sings. Sabrina has blonde hair and is four years older than Olivia, at 17, so the clues are confirmed.
Another clue in “Driver’s License” is the phrase: “I think you didn’t mean what you wrote in that song about me”, which may be referring to Joshua’s “Common Sense” and “Anyone Else” songs, which some believe be about Olivia. “Common Sense” is about the possibility of getting back together after a breakup, and “Anyone Else” seems to be about an ex who moves on and is with someone else.

And then, Joshua made a questioning marketing move when he decided to promote the release of his new song entitled “Lie Lie Lie” (which comes out on January 14), which he did on the exact same day that Olivia promoted his new song.
One of the images from the slide show shows him in a car with a blonde girl, who strangely echoes “Driver’s License”. One person commented, “Are you trying to steal Olivias’s thunder or what.”

And yes, if you want to know, Twitter is absolutely convinced that the “driver’s license” is about Joshua Bassett.

Notably, Joshua congratulated Olivia on the release of “Driver’s License”, and if they dated (and if the song really is about him), this is definitely a mature move.

Apparently, however, Olivia shared several IG stories about “Driver’s License”, except for Joshua. Burn!
Neither Joshua nor Olivia confirmed or denied their relationship (or breakup), but we are still living for this IRL High School Musical drama.
