The Galaxy S21 Ultra may be Samsung’s first to support 120 Hz + QHD

The Samsung Galaxy S20 series was the first line from Samsung to feature a high refresh rate (120 Hz) screen. However, there was a small problem with the execution. You can only run your S20 (and Note 20) at its native QHD resolution or 120 Hz refresh rate, but not both at the same time. It is not exactly clear why you cannot do both; the video processors on the Exynos 990 and Snapdragon 865 were probably capable and the bandwidth was probably there to drive that resolution and frame rate, so it’s possible that Samsung had concerns about power consumption with this combination of resolution and frame rate. (For what it’s worth, the Tab S7 series supports running your screen at its native resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate.) Fortunately, for the next generation of the Galaxy S21 Ultra, Samsung seems to have finally enabled support for 120 Hz refresh rate at native WQHD + (3200 x 1400) resolution.

Calls for Samsung to support this feature have come from all corners of the tech community, and it seems that Samsung is finally addressing these concerns for its flagships in early 2021. The Galaxy S21 Ultra will be the most sophisticated model in the next line from Samsung, and users will finally have the ability to activate both screen features at the same time if there is a leak from the Ice Universe.

The S21 Ultra is configured to feature the same 5000 mAh battery as the S20 Ultra, but it is rumored to have a much better battery life. This is possible due to the improved efficiency of the VRR OLED display technology used for the first time in the Note20 Ultra, allowing the device to switch to seamlessly switch to lower refresh rates when needed to reduce power consumption. If this is true, running both features at the same time should not be a concern for the battery. The new Galaxy S21 series is due to be announced at the next Unpacked event on January 14th, so we should know more about that soon.
