Across Texas, there were an additional 16,027 cases of COVID-19 and 334 deaths reported on Friday. The state has recorded 1,772,483 total cases and 27,771 deaths since the pandemic began in March.
In addition, for the fifth consecutive day, Texas broke a new record on Friday for patients hospitalized with COVID-19, according to The Associated Press. There were 12,481 COVID-19 patients in Texas hospitals, including 3,743 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Of the new cases reported on Friday, 12,369 were confirmed and 3,658 were likely. The state has reported 1,563,758 confirmed cases and 208,725 probable cases since the start of the pandemic.
The state also added 139 oldest confirmed cases and 145 oldest probable cases that were recently reported by laboratories.
The statewide seven-day average positivity rate for molecular testing, based on the date a test sample was collected, was 21.15% on Thursday. State health officials said that using data based on when people were tested provides the most accurate rate of positivity.
For antigen tests, the positivity rate for the same period was 13.78%.
Dallas County
Dallas County did not release new data on Friday because of the New Year holiday. The county will resume sharing COVID-19 figures on Saturday.
As of Thursday, the county had 172,165 confirmed cases and 21,153 probable cases. The county recorded 1,628 COVID-19 deaths.
Tarrant County
Tarrant County also did not release new figures on Friday and will resume reporting on Saturday.
As of Thursday, Tarrant County had seen a total of 150,004 cases —131,146 confirmed and 18,858 probable. There were 108,969 recoveries. The death toll in the county was 1,494.
According to Thursday’s figures on the county panel, a record 1,399 people were hospitalized with the virus.
Collin County
The state added 970 cases of coronavirus and three new deaths from COVID-19 to Collin County total on Friday. The county has already registered 49,393 cases and has a death toll of 373.
No details about the latest victims were available.
Of the new cases, 803 were confirmed and 167 were likely. Collin County recorded 44,171 confirmed cases and 5,222 probable cases. According to state data, the municipality has 4,513 active cases.
The county coronavirus panel provides only the total number of hospitalizations, which were 513.
Denton County
Denton County had not released any new data until 4 pm Friday.
As of Thursday, the county had a total of 39,182 cases, including 12,922 assets and 26,046 recoveries. The death toll was 214.
On Thursday, 202 patients with COVID-19 were hospitalized, the county said.
Other counties
The Texas Department of Health Services has taken over the reports from these other counties in North Texas. In some counties, new data may not be reported every day.

- Rockwall County: 6,270 cases (5,208 confirmed and 1,062 probable), 54 deaths.
- Kaufman County: 9,306 cases (8,125 confirmed and 1,181 probable), 122 deaths.
- Ellis County: 13,261 cases (11,675 confirmed and 1,586 likely), 175 deaths.
- Johnson County: 11,135 cases (9,872 confirmed and 1,263 likely), 162 deaths.
