9 new COVID-19 cases reported in Shanghai, including 6 transmitted locally

The city reported six new cases of locally transmitted coronavirus and three imported cases on Thursday, the Shanghai Health Commission said Friday morning.

The first local patient lives in the Huangpu district and tested positive for COVID-19 during regular nucleic acid tests conducted by the hospital for which he works.

The second patient also lives in the Huangpu district and is a neighbor of the first patient.

The third patient is a friend of the first patient and the test was positive when contacts close to the first patient were examined.

The fourth patient is related to the second patient and the test was positive when contacts close to the second patient were selected.

The fifth patient is a guest who lives in the hotel where the third patient works.

The sixth patient works at the same hotel in Huangpu district with the third patient.

The 74 nearby contacts were quarantined and observed at designated locations.

So far, of all 355 local cases, 342 have been discharged after recovery and six are hospitalized. No suspected local cases have been reported. So far, there have been seven local fatalities.

Among the three imported patients, the first is a Chinese man studying in the United States who arrived at Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport on January 19.

The second patient is a Chinese studying in Switzerland who arrived at Shanghai airport on 18 January.

The third patient is a Chinese man who works in India and arrived at Shanghai airport on January 19.

All new imported cases were transferred to the designated hospital for treatment, while 72 nearby contacts were quarantined and observed at designated locations.

Meanwhile, four imported patients were discharged after recovery.

Five suspected imported cases are being tested.

To date, of the 1,269 imported cases, 1,175 have been discharged after recovery and 94 are still hospitalized.

No cases of asymptomatic infection are under medical observation now, the local health commission said.
