COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) – The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control released new coronavirus recovery numbers on Tuesday.

The agency said that on June 15, it had “symptom onset data” for 12,836 people. Symptom onset data means that the agency knows the date when a person first showed signs of the disease, which helps authorities track the patient’s recovery.

Of those patients, the agency reported that 514 died, meaning that they have the recovery information for 12,322 people.

The agency said that of those patients, 79%, or 9,734 people, recovered from the virus.

DHEC described how it developed its recovery rate:

• Those who reported having been hospitalized were considered “recovered” based on not having reported any adverse results reported from> 32 days since the onset of the disease.

• Those who reported not having been hospitalized were considered “recovered” based on the fact that they had not reported any adverse results reported in> 14 days since the onset of the disease.

• Those for whom the hospitalization status was unknown were considered “recovered” based on the fact that there were no adverse results reported after> 32 days since the onset of the disease.

The agency explains that the recovery rate is based on “symptom onset” information, so the percentage is based on the number of individuals for whom the agency has “symptom onset” data, not the total number of cases in the state.
