A 78-year-old woman died shortly after being inoculated at a mass vaccination site in Los Angeles County, health officials announced on Saturday.
The patient’s family said she had a history of heart disease, said Dr. Michael E. Morris, director of the Kaiser Permanente Southern California vaccination program, in a statement.
The woman “died unexpectedly” on Friday after receiving the Pfizer version of the Covid-19 vaccine around noon at the Kaiser-run site in Cal Poly Pomona, 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, the doctor said. .
“While sitting in the observation area after the injection, the patient complained of discomfort and when evaluated by the medical team, she lost consciousness,” he said. “Paramedics at the scene started CPR almost immediately and continued, but it could not be revived.”
The cause of death has yet to be determined, but the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said via email that there were no signs of allergic or anaphylactic reactions.
“His death does not appear to be related to the vaccine,” said the newspaper.
The 57-year-old woman’s husband was also vaccinated Friday.
“Despite this tragedy, he is still calling for the COVID-19 vaccination effort to continue, and said he plans to receive his second dose of the vaccine in a few weeks,” said Morris.
Last week, health officials said the cause of death for a 58-year-old Virginia woman who had just received a vaccine from Pfizer was unknown.
In January, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health said there was no evidence to suggest that the Pfizer vaccine increased the risk of death.
