The incident happened around 7:00 pm on Allegheny Avenue, near B Street.
A 75-year-old woman crossing the street was hit by a brown Honda Civic traveling west on Allegheny Avenue, officials said.
The driver believes he is a Hispanic man who fled the scene.
Action News spoke to a man who said he was on a Septa bus on Allegheny Avenue when the accident happened, and the bus stopped suddenly.
“One car was trying to pass another and hit the pedestrian, and hit it, so hard that it overturned,” said David, a witness to the incident. “It turned in the air, the sneakers fell and everything. I was on the bus when it happened. The bus stopped, the driver called the police and everything.”
The woman, whose identity remains unknown, was taken to Temple University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, officials said.
A man believed to be the driver was taken into custody while authorities continue to collect evidence at this point.
