6th earthquake hits on Sunday, scientist says it is a normal occurrence

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – People are ready to leave the tour called the Wichita earthquake epidemic.

On Sunday, several earthquakes hit the area within 12 hours, according to the Kansas Geological Survey.

Senior scientist Rick Miller with KGS says it’s just a natural occurrence.

“I can relate this to a mechanic when he is trying to loosen a screw, it is really very tight that he is pulling, pulling and pulling and then it clicks,” said Miller. “This is more or less what we are doing here, that the earth is compressing, pushing and pulling into the deep underground.”

The two most recent earthquakes included the strongest and the weakest of the day.

KGS measured the strongest with a magnitude of 4.0, which reached Eastborough at 18h08. The weakest was reported by the USGS, measuring at a magnitude of 1.8, which shook Bel Aire at 10:01 pm
