Christmas may be coming late for many Americans, with $ 600 stimulus checks deposited directly into their accounts tonight, United States Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Tuesday.

Paper checks can be sent as early as Wednesday, he added.

Included as part of the $ 900 billion coronavirus aid package signed by President Trump over the weekend, the checks – while considered scarce by most Democrats and the president himself – will provide a necessary boost to an economy that has been hit by the pandemic of COVID-19 that killed more than 337,000 in the United States.

All American adults who earned less than $ 75,000 in 2019 and couples who earned less than $ 150,000 will receive a total amount of $ 600, as will their dependent children.

Those who won more will receive significantly less: a person who won $ 85,000 will receive only $ 100, while a person who won $ 100,000 will receive nothing.

However, checks may also not be the last round of financial aid.

On Monday, House Democrats, accompanied by 44 Republicans, approved a stand-alone bill that would provide $ 2,000 stimulus checks to American adults.

US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, under pressure from Senator Bernie Sanders and other progressives who threatened to paralyze the work of the upper house, said on Tuesday that he is willing to consider the measure – as long as it is associated with two measures. unrelated and potentially poisonous: one creating a commission to investigate the president’s groundless allegations of electoral fraud and the other repealing a law that grants social media companies legal immunity for content shared on their platforms.

McConnell earlier in the day blocked a Democratic effort to hold an independent vote on stimulus checks.
